Specialist Care for Bladder and Prostate Problems

Mr Richard Viney

Consultant Urological Surgeon and Senior Lecturer in Urology, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, Birmingham, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Born and educated in the West Midlands, Richard won a scholarship to study medicine at Birmingham University. After qualifying in 1995 and completing his house jobs, he taught anatomy for a year at Birmingham Medical School. He then undertook basic surgical training at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) Foundation Trust whilst completing his MRCS with both the Royal Colleges of Edinburgh and England.

Richard then entered the higher surgical training programme in the Midlands with sub-specialist training in urological cancer surgery. Just prior to completing his training he took a three year sabbatical. In this time he completed an MSc in Health Care Policy and Management with a dissertation on applying statistical process control tools in surgery and undertook a PhD on an MRC grant supported project in gene and immunotherapy in prostate cancer with CRUK at the School of Cancer Sciences at Birmingham University.

On completing his higher surgical training Richard was appointed as consultant urological surgeon at UHB and as a senior lecturer in urology at Birmingham University.

Clinically, his specialist interests include radical and focal, organ sparing treatments for prostate and renal cancers using both open and laparoscopic surgical approaches. He leads the testicular service and has been developing prostate mapping diagnostic services. He is the clinical service lead for the urological department.

Richard’s research interests reflect his surgical interests. Richard also has laboratory interests in immune responses in prostate and testicular cancer and is part of a wider group looking at immune responses and urinary biomarkers in bladder cancer. He has clinical trial interests in gene and immunotherapy in prostate cancer. He is also involved in the delivery of the ADUP gene therapy trial in prostate cancer and the HYMN trial in superficial bladder cancer.

Richard is a keen teacher and participates in the under- and postgraduate teaching programmes for medical students and junior doctors.
